Clay Neighborhood

My second graders started their clay project this week, here is a first peek at our clay neighborhood we are creating! The kids had a great time experimenting with different tools, adding textures, and carving into their clay.

Something strange climbed out of the kiln today...

Sixth grade monsters are getting glazed and fired this week! This little guy is obviously pleased with his shiny new blue coat.

Charcoal Self Portrait Gallery

Dylan and Maddy's self portraits

Fifth grade has been working for the last several weeks on proportion and drawing people. This is one of the most challenging units that we will study in all of the time our students spend at Union Ridge. These are in preparation for their final piece of the unit, when they will draw themselves as an American colonist, in connection with their current Social Studies unit. Click through to see an example of the final project and a gallery of self portraits!

Paul Klee Artist Study

Ava and her Fish Magic painting

Second graders have spent the last several weeks studying the artist Paul Klee and how he created the vibrant colors and designs his paintings are know for. We looked at two paintings in particular to get our inspiration, which you can see after the break.

District Art Show is a Huge Success!

Natalie, a contributing artist for the Monet Water Lilies Mural

We had a terrific turnout for last night's opening reception at Ridgefield High School! I would guess we had between 150 and 200 people at the show which included visual arts displays, musical performances, and interactive performance art. This is one of my favorite events of the year, because we get to see artwork from all of our schools, kindergarten through 12th grade. I was very happy to see so many community members come out to support these young artists, including our school board, Ridgefield city council members, and and many local artists! This was also our first show using the new display boards the district has purchased, which are a major improvement on our old system. A great night overall, thanks to everyone who participated! If you missed it, the work is on display through Friday, so be sure to check it out. More pictures after the break!
